Welcome to the World of Brian Harlan Brooks
I am a dancer, actor, teacher, choreographer, director, public speaker, Diversity Equity Inclusion Director, and hopeful visionary, dedicated to leaving the world a better place than when I arrived. My artistic journey is rooted in a commitment to social justice, mental health, wellness, and the transformative power of art.
As a teenager, I was deeply interested in three paths: Law, Psychology, and Dance. I chose dance, as it allows me to explore my passions for self-expression and performance. No matter the many other interests I have pursued, I am, and I will always be a dancer. Dance has instilled in me the physical, mental, and spiritual discipline that guides my journey as an artist. My diverse experiences empower me to communicate and unite people through art.
Whether I am teaching eighth graders in Kansas City, performing in front of a sold-out audience at the Joyce Theatre, collaborating with fellow actors on stage and screen, or directing and choreographing on a Broadway stage, I believe that art connects us all and inspires positive change. This space serves as an invitation for you to engage, learn, and grow with me as I deepen my craft and share my experiences.
VISION
My beginnings in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Teaneck, New Jersey, saw me dancing before I could walk and speaking before I could crawl. By sixth grade, I was absorbing choreography from Michael Jackson videos and teaching my friends, organizing lunchtime performances that mirrored my growing passion. My parents recognized my artistic talent early on. They surrounded me with myriad opportunities, enrolling me in local art magnet schools, summer arts programs, and studios like the Fred Kelley School of Dance and the Teaneck Terpsys.
Determined to pursue my artistic dreams, I sought the chance to audition for LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts, famously known as the "Fame School." Despite my mother's wise decision to keep me grounded in my community, this balance has shaped my perspective and enriched my connection to the arts.
I trained at The Dance Theater of Harlem and The Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, while actively participating in local performance opportunities. My career led me to perform with distinguished companies such as Forces of Nature, Philadanco, Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre, Donald Byrd/The Group, and many others. My love of being a performance artist was rivaled only by my passion for equitable and fair workspaces. This drive for equity led me to take on significant leadership roles in the dance community. As a dancer representative at Philadanco, rehearsal director at Donald Byrd/The Group, rehearsal director at Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre, and associate artistic director at Earl Mosley's Diversity of Dance. This love of knowledge and fair treatment of artists is connected directly to my extensive experience as a teaching artist. I have been teaching the lessons I have learned as soon as I grasp them since my formative years. Teaching was not just a side job for me, it was a passion. This passion led me to guest teach at such stellar institutions as The Ailey School, Kansas City Friends of Allvin Ailey, Long Island University, The Ailey Extension, and many others. As my body started to age, it was time to look ahead.
I transitioned seamlessly into musical theatre and film, performing in productions like "Your Arms Are Too Short to Box with God" and the First National Tour of "The Color Purple." Inspired by the storytelling
Through these thrilling musicals, I gained experience as a dance captain and swing, which deepened my artistic and leadership growth. As I auditioned, I started to gain attention as an actor. I wanted to secure my theatre training. I attended and completed the full two-year acting program at William Esper Studios. I danced in films such as Across the Universe and In the Heights. I co-starred in the independent movie Tormenting the Hen, written and directed by Theodore Collatos.
Throughout my extensive career as an associate choreographer and director, I have fully leveraged my artistic and leadership skills. Collaborating with other creatives to develop and maintain productions while using my voice to connect with exceptional artists, creative teams, managers, and producers is incredibly fulfilling.
As the associate choreographer and consultant for Motown the Musical, I worked closely with Berry Gordy. Most recently, I served as the associate director for Timothy Sheader's Olivier Award-winning production of Jesus Christ Superstar: The 50th Anniversary Tour and as the tour director for the Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff's Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations.
Maintaining these productions with multiple casts both domestically and internationally has been one of my greatest pleasures. Working alongside world-class actors, dancers, directors, choreographers, designers, and creative teams has deepened my passion and significantly expanded my storytelling skills in ways that are difficult to quantify.
I am honored to take on the role of director and choreographer. I have created an evening of my own work titled Continuum, and I choreographed The First Noel. Additionally, I directed While I Have the Floor, starring Ayodele Casel, and served as both the director and choreographer for The Color Purple and Jelly's Last Jam at Cape Fear Regional Theatre. I am thrilled to stand alongside my esteemed colleagues as a current Tony nominator and voter.
I am passionate about interdisciplinary collaboration and enjoy learning from a vibrant network of visual artists, musicians, choreographers, and performance artists who inspire and challenge me. I believe in creating spaces that encourage complete creative expression, motivated by the idea that art can heal and uplift those facing life's challenges. This conviction in the transformative power of humanity and art has led me to work in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA). Currently, I serve as the Director of DEI at Cape Fear Regional Theatre and as the Director of DEIA at K+K Reset, the leading HR consulting firm for Broadway and multiple touring productions.
As I continue to elevate my craft, I look forward to collaborating on projects that address and inspire social change, community growth, and artistic excellence. Join me on this journey, and let's explore the transformative power of art together.
